They are highly persistent in nature and accumulate in the food chain, mainly in the fatty tissue of animals. They are not produced intentionally or deliberately but are formed as a by-product of chemical processes.

Over time, these toxic substances can have harmful effects on human health and can cause kidney and liver cancers. 80% of human exposure is through food. Contamination can vary widely depending on the origin of the foodstuff. Meat and dairy products, fish and shellfish are known to have the highest contamination rates.
