Why is it important?

Pesticides are chemicals products intended to repel, destroy or control pests and undesirable species of plants or animals. They include: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, growth regulators and repellents.

The term “pesticide” has a broader definition than “plant protection product”. It also includes veterinary molecules, substances for the protection of wood or those used in paints. The term “plant protection product” is commonly used to describe those only used on plants.

In EU, all questions relating to the legal limits of pesticide residues in food and feed are governed by the regulation (EC) No 396/2005. This Regulation also contains provisions on official controls on pesticide residues in foodstuffs of plant or animal origin which can arise as a result of their use.
