Why is it important?

The term active substance or active ingredient refers to a chemical substance that has a therapeutic effect. The active substance usually represents a small proportion in comparison to the excipients.

Although there are still medicines which contain active ingredients extracted from plants, most modern pharmaceutical products contain active substances of which the chemical structure of their molecules is well known.

The French Plant regulation lists the 540 plants authorized for the manufacture of food supplements along with the conditions under which they may be used. This law imposes analytical controls for plant identification/characterization and for a number of potentially harmful substances.
